Solitary blooms appear on silvery stems covered in fine hairs usually just about the time daffodils have finished blooming. The petal-less blooms instead consist of 5 to 8 deep purple sepals that are softly hairy on their exterior surfaces. Inside the 4-inch diameter blooms lies a cluster of white to purple styles and a thick ring of fluffy yellow stamens. Flowering occurs from early to mid-spring and lasts for about two weeks. Foliage consists of palmately divided basal leaves with compound linear lobes with coarse teeth along the margins. The upper surface is relatively smooth but the undersides are covered in long, silky white hairs. Leaves are attached by long hairy petioles. Silvery plume-like seed heads occur after flowering and the furry foliage persists into summer. Plants will self-seed in ideal conditions.Planting GuidePlants require full sun and dry to average, well-drained, alkaline (pH of 7 to 8) soil for best performance. Root rot can be problematic without proper drainage. Ideally a location with scant vegetation and dry, rocky or gritty soil is preferred as this reduces competition with other plants.
